The texas state fair
I have always loved going to the state fair. Essentially, it combines all of my favorite things: creatively fried foods (duh, my favorite part), farm animals (I’m a sucker for the goats), the pungent smell of cow manure (this is what gives the fair its signature smell), beer gardens (is there another type of garden?), music and games in which those otherwise disinteresting hard-stuffed animals become the reason you unknowingly blew $40 trying to get the ring on the bottle. I LOVE THE FAIR!
Not having the opportunity to go last year, I went full throttle this year. I mean… there was no stopping me… I was a cowgirl on a mission to do all my favorite things. We got there in the early part of the afternoon and went straight to the dog show (one of my favorites!).
How cute is this?! In the dog show, there is a dog race (you can kind of make out the jumps and tunnels in the picture), a dog trick show, and the jump show. The trick show accentuates their training, and boy oh boy these dogs are really talented! They did handstands, conga lines, and a run-and-jump-to-a-backflip-off-the-chest and caught a frisbee mid-air! But my all time favorite is the jump show, where the dogs run and jump off a dock and catch a toy in the air and then land in a mini pool of water. I think I like it because there are always Labradors in the competition and I dream of the day when my dog can do it.
After the exciting dog show, I was in much need of some fried fuel. And true to my nature, I wanted to try all of the fun and creative treats. So I had Fried Grilled Cheese, Fried Brisket Twisted Taco, Fried Spaghetti and Meatballs, Fried Oreos and a Funnel Cake Beer. Everything was out of this world delicious. I don’t regret any of the 4,000 calories I had ingested that day. Well maybe except the beer, because it just tasted like bitter ale, not like funnel cake. Slight disappointment.
And after a binge of calories like that, you have to walk it off and pet some furry animals. One of the things I love about the fair is they let you get so close to the animals! When can you ever say you petted a giraffe or a zebra in the same day?
Such sweet lil thangs!
By now we had watched some talented dogs, ate our way through the fair, so naturally we needed to end the day with Ostrich racing. It is actually quite hilarious watching jockeys mount these giant birds and race them around the track like horses. If you’re a betting man, I think ostrich racing is the next big thing.
It was the perfect end to a perfect day! I suggest everyone go to the Texas State Fair because it’s the biggest fair in the state, and everything is bigger in Texas!
